Australian architecture has a number of iconic structures to its credit. One of the best examples that enjoy worldwide recognition is the Sydney Opera House. Designed by the legendary Danish architect Jorn Utzon, who won the design contract from among 233 entries from 32 countries. Construction of the Sydney Opera House started in March 1959 and took 14 years to complete at a cost of $103 million. It has been designed to accommodate five different performance spaces; the Concert hall, the Opera theatre, the Drama Theatre, the Playhouse and the Studio each to seat 2679,1547, 544, 398 and 400 people respectively. Apart from these it also has other performance areas like the Utzon Room, which can accommodate 244 people and the Forecourt, which is an open-air venue providing a number of configuration options. There are also five restaurants and a four souvenir shops. The electrical consumption of the opera house is equivalent to a town of about 25000 residents. The length of the power cables used for electrical distribution is approx. 645 kilometres.

The architectural design of the opera house is exceptional, still considered modern and unmatched even after three and a half decades of its existence. The structure is built over 4.5 acres of land. It measures 605 feet in length and at its widest point is 388 feet wide. The whole structure stands on 588 concrete piers sunk to a depth of 25 meters below sea level.
